This is a very important warning, and I especially appreciate the distinction between testing a technology and testing the assumptions behind the test.

From a field perspective, technology does not enter an empty battlefield. It enters a human system of adaptation, friction, logistics, command decisions, terrain, morale, and countermeasures. What works today can quickly produce an adaptation tomorrow—and that adaptation may change the value of the technology itself.

That is why I think the real lesson of Ukraine is not simply “buy more drones, AI, EW, or sensors.” It is to keep asking whether our assumptions are surviving contact with reality.

The field should not merely validate doctrine. Sometimes, the field has to correct it.

That feedback loop—observation, experience, analysis, adaptation, and then renewed practice—is perhaps more important than any individual technology.

Thank you for bringing historical humility back into the discussion of future war.
